Holidays are a time for happiness, yet to many pets, the holidays can be full of hazards.  

Please consider the following hazards and take appropriate precautions to avoid harm to your pet..

Trees

Cats may hide in trees and serve as a tipping hazard.

Needles can injure eyes.

Live tree preservatives in water may cause GI irritation.

 

Ornaments

May break and cause lacerations to tender feet.

Small ornaments may be ingested causing an obstruction.

Ribbon/Tinsel are extremely dangerous if ingested as it can lacerate intestines.

Lights can serve as an electrocution possibility.

Candles

If tipped over, can cause fire and wax burns.

Plants

Poinsettia can cause GI irritation.

Mistletoe can cause GI irritation and possibly be fatal.

Foods

Fatty foods often induce pancreatitis causing vomiting and diarrhea.

Bones can cause GI obstructions.

Chocolate (semi sweet/bitter sweet is most toxic) can cause vomiting, diarrhea and neurological signs.

Coffee can cause raised body temperature, quivering, throwing up, panting, diarrhea, seizures, frequent urination, immoderate thirst and rapid heart rate.

Macadamia Nuts can cause weakness and inability to walk, especially in the hind legs, vomiting, depression, tremors and elevated body temperature.

Batteries

If ingested can cause life threatening GI ulceration.

Antifreeze

Deadly in very small amounts; common to leak from cars during extremely cold temps.
Rat/Mouse Bait

Can be deadly in small amounts; place in inaccessible areas.
