Summer Vacations With Your Pet
Traveling tips for a safe summer of fun.
Summer’s here, and that means family vacations.
Whether you choose to make your pet part of your travel or not, here are some things to remember.
Taveling by plane is a quick way to get where you’re going. It’s important, though, to contact your airline to determine what documents are necessary for pet travel. Some airlines require updated vaccines, whereas others will require a health certificate from a veterinarian.
Be advised that if you are going to island countries such as Japan, Australia, and Great Britain, there are several steps that must be followed prior to your departure including:
- STEP 1: Advanced Notification
- STEP 2: Individual Identification by microchip
- STEP 3: Rabies vaccination
- STEP 4: Measurement of rabies antibody levels
- STEP 5: 180 days wait
- STEP 6: Health Certificate
- STEP 7: Recommended treatments and measures

A mini “vaca” for your pet.
Many families have a boarding facility they have used and are happy with. If you don’t, ask us for a recommendation. It’s important to make sure your pet is ready for his stay. All boarding facilities have their own policies regarding vaccine requirements. Contact them to determine what (if any) vaccines will be needed at the scheduled time of boarding. Vaccines need to be administered at least 2 weeks prior to the time your pet will be boarding to allow a proper immune response to occur.
We’re here to offer any help we can to make sure you and your pet have the best summer ever. Give us a call to ask questions or to schedule an appointment for anything you might need before traveling.
Now, go out and make it a great summer!
